THE COLUMNAR ORDER OF THE HEXAPLA* By HARRY M. Mohr, Hbk. ISBN: X. pp In his Hexapla (from the Greek word for 'sixfold') Origen arranges six versions of the Old Testament in parallel columns for comparative study. The first column is the original Hebrew; next comes a transliteration of this in Greek letters, so that Christians can pronounce the Hebrew text; this is followed by the Septuagint, and then by Greek.
Summary So, in short, the Hexapla probably was a six-parallel-columned synopsis consisting of two “Hebrew” columns and four Greek columns. That Fifth column may not have included the critical signs, for probably the synopsis was sufficient for indicating the differences between the Hebrew and Greek versions.
The Hexapla, as the title suggests, was a book with six parallel columns: a Hebrew version of the Old Testament (the Jewish scriptures), a transliteration of the Hebrew into Greek characters, the Greek versions of Aquila, Symmachus, the Septuagint, and Theodotion, in that order. Since the six or seven columns, as the case might be, were visible at every opening of the Hexapla, each column must have been quite narrow.
The fragments show, in fact, that one or at most two Hebrew words were placed on each line, with the transliteration in the adjoining column and the various renditions in the succeeding columns, all on the same level.
